FourSquare has not only made it’s application a way to share locations but has also turned it into a game. I think this feature has made the app more fun and has people talking about it. As you explore the city you are in you can keep track of where you go and win badges such as a Newbie badge which will be the first one you get. It is also useful when you can find popular locations that are near you. This sometimes helps me find new venues.

You can check-in on a regular computer. This is how. In your address bar, type m.foursquare.com that should give you the exact same page people would see using the mobile web app on their phone. So far I have had no problem with it, and it's great in order to add new places. Hope this helps!

Just don't link it to twitter if you're on a trek. Or don't link it to twitter at all. I also don't like the "I just became mayor..." tweets as it has no tweet value, imho.

Not choice to love this apps... because I was the mayor of a restaurant the owner notice me and he offered a free plate to thanks me to come so often. On top of that many of my friends and other stranger check in more often …. It’s great for that I guess

By the way there is app for blackberry now

@TheRealTimJones I like getting the notifications normally most people don't use it like you do! :) I also hate losing points when switching cities.

FourSquare seems to be the hot topic the past day or two - I wrote six ways to use it without annoying people just this morning after seeing quite a number of people complaining about it on Twitter. This is a great write-up, Steph! Really well thought out. I've turned off notifications for all but check-ins myself - and awesome advice about not uploading your face as an avatar.

Trish -- you can use your computer...if you have a Mac. Dave Taylor has a good write-up on it on askdavetaylor.com I'm sure similar options are coming to the PC (don't hear that very often).

MicroSteph...and others -- you do know there's an option to shut all those annoying notifications off, so even if someone (what? who? me? never!) was oversharing (that sounds a lot like rules -- I don't like rules), it wouldn't affect you. :)

Great post, Steph and a very good primer for the latest geek game.

I did notice that all those points I racked up in Vegas, though did not transfer once I changed cities. Not happy about that. Now, I have to overshare, drastically to win in my own town, this week.

I wish there was a way to check in using your computer because I have a BlackBerry that has a wonky battery and wish I could check in that way.

Otherwise it's good, but I think only the conference thing is way oversharing.
